The blackbird, which used to live in the forest, or the peregrine falcon, which was still threatened with extinction in the 1970s, have discovered the city as a habitat. Conservationists and bird lovers are doing a lot to help our feathered friends. Creating nesting opportunities, green roofs, urban gardening and green spaces are bringing back old species and even adding new ones. For example, a large colony of a gull species that otherwise lives on the Mediterranean Sea on the outskirts of Frankfurt is a result of climate change... The Egyptian geese, on the other hand, are not immigrants, but zoo refugees and a rather dubious gain. All other water birds are mercilessly displaced in the territories they occupy. The white-tailed eagles that regularly fly at great heights over the city can only be spotted by experts, but enjoying the swifts in the summer months is a special experience even for laymen.
