A great storyteller at his best
Few writers can tell of the tragedies of the human condition in their works in a way that is both light-footed and compelling. William Boyd can. He is one of Britain's most widely read authors. In "Blind Love", published by the new Kampa Verlag, he tells the story of the gifted young piano tuner Brodie Moncur, who leaves Edinburgh at the end of the 19th century to make a career in Paris. There he meets the Russian soprano Lydia Blum, called Lika, and falls head over heels in love with her. Brodie embarks on an exciting affair with her and travels with her and the piano virtuoso John Kilbarron through half of Europe, which is undergoing fundamental change. But then Lika leaves him. The conversation with William Boyd in German and English is conducted by the journalist Margarete von Schwarzkopf. Narrator Jochen Nix reads from the German translation.
