More than a hundred years ago, women were trained as graduate architects for the first time at the technical universities in Germany. They have made significant contributions to the development of 20th and 21st century architecture, often with innovative ideas and not infrequently against massive opposition. More than almost any other discipline, architecture has always been a male domain. Little has changed in this regard to this day. For some years now, more women than men have been studying at architecture colleges. The trend is Europe-wide, in Germany most clearly with more than 53 percent. On the other hand, there are only 30.9 percent women among architects working in the profession. Although more women today than in the past are attaining leading positions as partners in architectural offices, as university lecturers, as presidents of architectural associations, such careers do little to change the gender imbalance in architecture. The founding of offices, the filling of influential positions and professorships is still a matter for men. The exhibition at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum explores this phenomenon and shows historical and current developments.
