"Woyzeck" is the most famous drama fragment in theatre history and Büchner the most famous playwright from Hesse. Shortly before his death in 1837, the then 23-year-old doctor of medicine created with his scenes a dramaturgy of modernity that still shapes our reading and viewing experience today: short sentences, abrupt scene endings, parallel narrative strands and rapid changes of place and time generate a world that becomes a fragment for man himself. Woyzeck is not merely the victim of social conditions or a pathological model case. In his drama, Büchner simultaneously dissects the experience of a new homelessness: a life that is no longer held together by any sense or morality, nor by the small happiness of family or the great happiness of love. In Woyzeck's eyes, the world disintegrates into a non-commitment in the midst of which he becomes the plaything of others. The God to whom Woyzeck appeals has long since left the world.
