For the premiere, there's a treat right away: Yasiin Bey performing classics by his alter ego Mos Def on his "The Ecstatic 10th Anniversary Tour" - culminating with an exclusive gig together with The Roots on July 11 in Berlin.
Hailing as "one of the most inherently musical rappers of all time" by the New York Times, Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def returns to German stages after more than 6 years! He released his first record "Universal Magnetic" via "Rawkus Records", which was followed by a joint album with Talib Kweli under the name Black Star. Due to the great talent of the two, they were considered by some critics to be the successors of A Tribe Called Quest. In 1999 Mos Def released his debut album called "Black on Both Sides" - on which he collaborated with the likes of DJ Premier, Diamond D and Busta Rhymes. From 2001, the rapper began to devote himself mainly to his acting career: he was seen in Monster's Ball together with Halle Berry, Billy Bob Thornton and Heath Ledger, Brown Sugar, The Italian Job and many more. Then in 2004, the multiple Grammy nominee released his second album, The New Danger, on which he incorporated a wide variety of influences including rock and soul.
His last album to date under the name "The Ecstatic" was released in 2009.
In September 2011, Mos Def announced that he would be changing his name to Yasiin Bey in 2012. July 2013, he depicted the force-feeding of a Guantanamo detainee in a drastic video for London-based human rights organisation Reprieve, by award-winning director Asif Kapadia, in a bid to raise awareness and show solidarity with the fate of the men held without charge at the US military base Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba for over a decade. The video was published via the Guardian's website and went viral by the millions on social media. As part of the 10th anniversary of his latest album, Yasiin Bey aka Mos Def will now embark on a big "The Ecstatic 10th Anniversary Tour" in May, giving his fans the best songs of his creative period.
