From impossibly tiny to breathtakingly large, from abstract beauty to deceptively lifelike, folded objects by a variety of origami artists are on display in the Mathematikum's exhibition space. Variety made of paper From the first glance at the models, it is clear that origami is much more than the mere folding of paper. The artists bring paper to life in wondrous ways. They transform small squares of paper into fabulous creatures, animals, and flowers that look so realistic you could mistake them for real. It seems as if the faces show emotion and the flower blossoms give off a fragrance. Some of the works are full of intricate folds, while others are beautiful precisely because of their few creases. The art exhibition "You Can Crease!" highlights modern origami as well as lesser-known aspects of the Japanese art of folding. Many different techniques, different kinds of paper and mathematical refinements allow for a variety, of whose richness one gets an idea in the exhibition. On the one hand, the focus is on noble, geometric patterns and objects, which illustrate the strong connection to mathematics. On the other hand, it is the creative use of paper that turns the models into artful sculptures. Highlights of the exhibition include a giant origami surprise model, as well as several fingernail-size objects. In addition, visitors are greeted in the entrance by a cloud made of 1000 cranes, which many pupils from Giessen have folded for the exhibition. Participation stations in the exhibition invite young and old to fold. (Text: Mathematikum)
