About the film

Srulik (Andrzej and Kamil Tkacz) is barely nine years old when he manages to escape from the Warsaw Ghetto just in time. To escape the German soldiers, he flees to the vast, impassable forest area of Kampinoski, where he must learn what it's like to survive in the wilderness all by himself. How to sleep in trees, hunt small animals and feed on berries. Driven by an unshakable survival instinct, he survives the first months of his escape. But the icy cold of winter and unbearable loneliness drive the boy back to civilization.

How can he know who to trust and who not to trust? Few people are willing to risk their lives for a little strange boy who might be a Jew. It is not until one day he knocks on the door of Magda Janczyk (Elisabeth Duda), a single peasant whose husband and sons have joined the partisans, that Srulik learns what is arguably the most important and yet most painful lesson in order to survive: Magda teaches him to deny his religion, and with it his identity, and henceforth to make his way as the Catholic orphan boy Jurek. On his three-year odyssey through occupied Poland, fear of discovery remains his constant companion. He meets people who help him, but also those who betray him. Only by merging ever more strongly with his false identity and increasingly repressing his true origins does Srulik succeed in doing the impossible: surviving the madness of this period.

Pepe Danquart (At the Limit, Hell Tour) directs this deeply moving story, based on true events, as an ode to life and humanity. The film memorializes all the children who, even today, struggle to survive in many parts of the world and are forced to rise above in the process.

RUN YOUNG RUN depicts the incredible life story of Yoram Fridman, made world famous by Uri Orlev's best-selling novel of the same name. A story that teaches that reality sometimes trumps any imagination.

A French-Polish Elisabeth Duda shines alongside acting discoveries and twin brothers Andrzej and Kamil Tkacz as Srulik/Jurek. Other roles are played by Jeanette Hain (Poll), Rainer Bock (Das weisse Band) and Itay Tiran (Lebanon). The screenplay was written by Heinrich Hadding (The Pope Joan) with the collaboration of Pepe Danquart.

LAUF JUNGE LAUF was awarded the rating "especially valuable" by the German Film and Media Rating (FBW).

"LAUF JUNGE LAUF is an impressive film full of strength and hope about the victory of humanity over the inhuman horrors of the Nazi era. ... A respectful bow to all the people who helped the persecuted during the war, regardless of the consequences they themselves had to face." (FBW statement)
