Film: It's one of those days when everything just goes wrong. Not only does Mark (Mark Doherty), an actor not exactly used to success, seem to have applied for a role for nothing once again, he then gets dumped by his girlfriend. But these are still the good moments on this day. Because through a chain of unfortunate coincidences, the people around Mark are dying like flies. Together with his best friend Pierce (Dylan Moran), a screenwriter now also fearing for his life, Mark tries to cope with the deadly situation. But when a policewoman suddenly shows up at the apartment door, the situation threatens to escalate.

Irish director Ian Fitzgibbon's "A Film with me in it" is a delightfully offbeat blend of working-class satire, absurdist thriller and jet-black comedy, with screenwriter and lead Mark Doherty essaying the perfect role. The way Doherty whines his way wonderfully lethargic through the macabre proceedings is just too delicious to watch. Shining alongside him is Dylan Moran, who made his name on the series "Black Books" and supporting roles in films like "Shaun of the Dead" and "Run, Fat Boy, Run". This duo of actors also saves the film over the rather weaker moments and makes the numerous strong scenes even more worth watching.

Packed with small guest appearances from director Neil Jordan, for whom Doherty has also appeared twice in front of the camera in small roles, and "Tudors" star Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and filled with quirky ideas, especially involving the ways of death, "A Film with Me in It" proves that great entertainment can be created on a small budget. Admittedly, the story takes a bit to get going. The first few minutes seem a bit sluggish and dull, but once the chain of macabre events is set in motion, the viewer is guaranteed not to get bored.

Whoever appreciates black comedies from the Anglo-Saxon world will definitely enjoy this Irish secret tip from Fantasy Filmfest 2010. Absolutely recommendable!

Picture + Sound: The cool, reduced colour scheme captures the atmosphere of the film very well. Overall, the picture is on a decent level, though could definitely be better in terms of detail sharpness and contrast. The audio remains largely dominated by the dialogue and only gets a bit of dynamics in a few moments through well-implemented surround effects. Bottom line, there is a deserved for the technical implementation: good!

Extras: Except for the trailer and other film tips from the provider, there is unfortunately no bonus material on the DVD.

Conclusion: "A film with me in it" is a whimsical piece of black humor that entertains well thanks to the good actors and some weird-macabre ideas. The DVD is technically decent, but unfortunately offers no bonus material. Nevertheless: for lovers of the somewhat darker humor absolutely recommendable!
