Africa Alive 2016

Africa Alive 2016

Film Program for the Festival in the Cinema of the Deutsches Filmmuseum and Filmforum Höchst

Thursday, February 4, to Thursday, February 11. February

CLASSICS AND RARITIES - Films from South Africa
Accompanying film series from Tuesday, February 2, to Tuesday, February 23

In its 22nd edition, the Africa Alive festival once again presents the African continent with a broad spectrum of documentaries and feature films. In addition to recent films and award winners of the FESCAPO Film Festival in Ouagadougou, there is an extensive accompanying programme.

This year's thematic focus is dedicated to generational and political change in Africa under the title "Generation Change. In many African countries, protests have risen in recent years against outdated regimes that clung to power against the will of the people. At the end of 2014, there was a change of power in Burkina Faso, where the initiative also came from the people. Characteristic of the civil movements in both countries was the importance of music, especially rap and hip-hop. In this regard, the films UNE RÉVOLUTION AFRICAINE (BF 2014) and BOY SALOUM (FR 2013) will be screened during the festival, as well as the short film programme "African Hip-Hop. Related to the struggle against repression is also the persecution of homosexual people in some African countries. In his film STORIES OF OUR LIVES (KE/ZA 2015), Jim Chuchu tells the story of homosexual women and men in Kenya.

The opening film of Africa Alive, MÖRBAYASSA (GN/FR 2014), is about a young woman who breaks free from financial and social constraints and searches for her daughter in Europe. The film's director, Cheick Fantamady Camara, is expected to attend as a guest.
