Content: Actually, it was only planned as an experiment, which should be broadcast as a gap filler between two seasons of Big Brother. After 120 episodes should actually already be over again. But it turned out quite differently: The fake docu-soap Berlin Day & Night developed after slight teething problems to a real ratings hit for RTL II and so they also soon decided to rather do without a new season of Big Brother and instead to provide the ever-growing fan base of Berlin Day & Night with new material. This decision has absolutely paid off for the channel. The series has long since gained a cult following among fans, and there is now even the first spin-off set in Cologne.

The concept of Berlin Tag & Nacht is relatively simple. The series follows a group of Berliners between the ages of 18 and 42, who live together in various WGs, through their everyday lives and nightlife. Relationship problems, parties, arguments, professional and private changes, wishes and dreams - all this is the focus of the protagonists day by day. Through the format of a docu-soap, in which the supposedly real people repeatedly comment directly to the camera on what is happening, a kind of realism is played out for the fans, which in turn makes it possible to build up a greater closeness to the characters and their stories. Those who can get involved and who like such a format will of course be quickly captivated by the addictive factor that the series then radiates.

In episodes 159 to 176, which are included in this ninth DVD box set, BTN fans can then witness how Marcel, who actually believes he is happily involved with Meike, is completely thrown off track when Ceylan suddenly reappears and makes clear advances towards him. But for Marcel his ex is at most a good friend, nothing more. Joe, on the other hand, will do anything to win back his Peggy. When he fears that he has lost her forever, he takes the decisive step and plans to propose to her romantically. But will she actually be able to forgive his misstep and say yes?

Ole has completely different problems. He desperately wants to gain a foothold in the pop music business. But for this he must get absolutely to the star manager Amaretto. A daring streaker action should finally get him the attention of the manager. But the plan seems to backfire at first. Carlos also has problems, as he tries desperately to resist Naomi's advances. After all, she is with Piet, and Carlos doesn't want to mess with him. But just at a moment when he is weakening towards her, Piet shows up and Naomi, out of self-protection, claims that Carlos sexually assaulted her. A lie with consequences...

That's not all: there's also the fear of a possible HIV infection, a heated argument between Joe and Marcel and then there seems to be something developing between Tyler and Hanna's mother. Enough fuel for exciting days and nights in Berlin.

Berlin day & night is a phenomenon that divides and polarizes. For some, the series is cult, for others it's nasty trash and an omen of the culture's final collapse. But whether you like the series or not, you can't deny its success. And so a DVD series like this is not aimed at the critics, but at the fans, and they will be happy to put these episodes in a box on their shelf and watch them again and again. And therefore also applies: Nothing for beginners, but for fans quite recommendable!

Picture + Sound: The technical implementation of the DVD is on a good TV level. The picture is clean, has decent overall sharpness and authentic coloration. The stereo sound makes the dialogues sound powerful from the speakers, otherwise only the music determines the tonal events. For a fake docu-soap, this is perfectly adequate. Good!

Extras: Real bonus material have the DVDs not to offer. For fans, however, the box is at least a pair of BTN laces.

Conclusion: No matter whether you Berlin day & night now like, or not, that the fake-docu-soap is a real phenomenon and a real ratings-bringer, can simply not be denied. Season 9 offers the episodes 159 to 176 in good picture and sound quality, unfortunately, the fans have to do without real bonus material. At least, however, the fan edition comes with a pair of BTN shoelaces that big fans of the series will surely be happy about. Certainly not a box for newcomers, but who the daily TV dose is not enough, which can access here confidently.
