As Jacob in the Twilight movies, Taylor Lautner has risen to become a coveted teen star in no time. While constantly overshadowed by vampire Edward as the handsome werewolf, he now gets the chance to carry an entire movie on his well-toned shoulders alone in the action thriller Breathless - Dangerous Truth.

In the film, Lautner plays high school student Nathan Harper, who is astonished when he finds his own picture on a missing children's website while researching a school project. When he confronts his parents (Maria Bello, Jason Isaacs), he learns that they are not his biological family. They can't tell him any more than that, because suddenly their home is attacked by a hit squad and reduced to rubble. Nathan is able to escape and, along with his classmate Karen (Lily Collins), sets out to find his true identity. But the journey into his unknown past could end fatally for the teenager.

Probably the most important news for all female Taylor Lautner fans first: it only takes five minutes for the actor to shed his shirt in best Jacob fashion and make his fans sweat with a bare torso. But that's not the only thing that's strongly reminiscent of Jacob. Because the rest of Lautner's performance is also very similar to what he delivers in the popular Twilight series. Especially when he looks angrily into the camera, you expect him to immediately turn into a wolf. Acting versatility is not really evident here. But since the film is clearly tailored to Lautner and should primarily please his fans, this is actually not too bad.

What's sad, on the other hand, is that director John Singleton (2Fast 2Furious) only really put any effort into the staging when it comes to the action sequences and duels. Because the dialogues are really extremely flat and the dramaturgy is sloppy. Thereby the movie wastes the talent of great actors like Alfred Molina, Sigourney Weaver, Michael Nyqvist (Millennium-Troligie), Maria Bello or Jason Isaacs in an almost criminal way. Instead of placing some of the dramaturgical burden on these experienced shoulders, Singleton demotes this top-notch ensemble to extras and lets Lautner and Lily Collins, daughter of Phil Collins, carry the entire story alone. And with that, the two young stars are just completely out of their depth.

So Breathless - Dangerous Truth can not be called a good film by any stretch of the imagination. While there is some potential there, it is completely given away in order to let Taylor Lautner fill the screen as often and as appealingly as possible. And so, in the end, the only real question is whether the film can at least appeal to its target audience. Here, the answer is quite clearly. Yes! Because for one thing, the thriller is clearly a vehicle for Taylor Lautner and fans really do get enough of that. In addition, the production, for all its flaws, has a certain entertainment value and a decent level of suspense that will at least satisfy moviegoers under 20. Therefore, if you want to watch Breathless - Dangerous Truth to see a great action thriller again, you can save your money. But for whom Taylor Lautner is the real reason to buy a movie ticket, he/she will certainly be well served!
