How should one approach the portrait of an exceptional artist like Charlotte Rampling? That's what director Angelina Maccarone asked herself before she set to work on her documentary The Look. Her solution is as simple as it is effective: she has made Charlotte Rampling not the object, but the subject of the film. She herself talks about her professional and private past and talks to companions about the aspects that make up life and work.

So, for example, she discusses aging with writer Paul Auster on his boat in New York, remembers with photographer Juergen Teller how she broke taboos, fathoms the demons in her life with lyricist Frederick Seidel and reflects on death with painter Anthony Palliser. Photographer Peter Lindbergh, production designer Franckie Diago, Rampling's son Barnaby Southcombe, and director Joy Fleury are also among the interviewees in this very intimate, compelling portrait, which is enhanced with numerous film clips from Rampling's ouvre, from Woody Allen's Stardust Memories to Sidney Lumet's The Verdict to Francois Ozon's Swimming Pool.

Charlotte Rampling - The Look is a fascinating documentary that it may be beneficial, but not necessarily necessary, to be a fan of the actress to enjoy. For the conversations are truly not just about Rampling's work, but go into much more depth, and as a result are simply extremely fascinating in a very human way. Moreover, this film makes it very clear what makes this artist so fascinating. Charlotte Rampling, quite apart from her work as an actress, is a very exciting person whose view on life, on vanities, on love and passions are conveyed in an extremely engaging way.

Her look, by which can be meant both her appearance and her look, but somehow also her view on life, makes Charlotte Rampling a very special woman - and this film a very special documentary that can be warmly recommended to lovers of sophisticated portraits of artists. Absolutely recommended!
