Content: David Lynch is undoubtedly one of the most important filmmakers in recent film history. Certainly, his eccentric and at times highly experimental style tend to appeal to a small audience. But with films like WILD AT HEART and BLUE VELVET, and of course the TWIN PEAKS series, Lynch has made a significant mark on the cinema and television landscape. Capelight has now put together a five DVD box set that should be a feast for any David Lynch fan. Even the first DVD in the set holds a very special highlight, presenting the cult film ERASERHEAD uncut and remastered. Lynch's first feature film, a surreal nightmare, has an almost hypnotic fascination even after almost thirty years. Although the film is not really light material, this DVD belongs in every good Lnych collection. On the second DVD is the highly interesting documentary LYNCH (one), which reveals in 82 minutes a very frank insight into the working methods and the mind of the director. Filmed during the preparations and the shooting of Inland Empire, the whole thing presents itself in typical Lynch manner. Sometimes in color, sometimes in black and white, accompanied by eerie sounds. No making of Inland Empire, but a quirky documentary filled with interesting interviews and candid insights into the life and work of an eccentric director and quirky artist. Absolutely recommended! DVD 3 contains all the episodes of Lynch's cartoon series DUMBLAND. At only 32 minutes running time, this is the shortest DVD, and its content takes a lot of getting used to, both visually and in terms of content. But for fans even these weird cartoons belong to the absolute must-have. DVD 4 presents DYNAMIC:01, the best contributions from Lynch's website DavidLynch.com. Of particular interest is the last post, in which Lynch answers questions from users. But some of the other short films and experimental works are also quite fascinating. Finally, the last DVD offers five short films by Lynch. SIX MEN GETTING SICK, THE ALPHABET, THE GRANDMOTHER, THE AMPUTEE, LUMIERE belong primarily to the director's early work and therefore present themselves in quite modest quality. However, it is extremely exciting to see where the roots of Lynch's great work lie. Although many of the entries on DVDs 3-5 are not really suitable for repeated enjoyment, this collection still represents a very good overview of David Lynch's artistic output away from his better known works. Featuring work from his time as an art student as well as highlighting his current working methods, the box also shows Lynch's development as an artist over thirty years of his career. Certainly only what for fans, but for them this box is: absolutely recommendable! Image + sound: The image quality of the individual contributions varies greatly, is especially with the older works on a very meager level. But in part, dirt and blurring belong to deliberately used stylistic devices and can therefore not be rated negatively. The sound is in stereo throughout, with only the English language version available. German subtitles, however, are available for all features. The lack of a German soundtrack is not bad insofar as in many works anyway only a few, or no words are spoken. Extras: Except for DVD 3, each disc has additional bonus material to offer. The best is right there on DVD1. Here is a nearly 85 minute documentary on ERASERHEAD, in which Lynch not only talks about the complicated making of his feature debut, but also about his beginnings as a filmmaker and art student. It's extremely exciting and an absolute must-see for fans. In addition to the documentary, the second DVD has a few more short sequences and trailers to offer. DVDs 4 and 5 offer an interesting introduction by Lynch for each short, as well as an alternate version of THE AMPUTEE. Overall, a good offering! Conclusion: David Lynch 5 is a must-have for all fans of the eccentric director. Whether it's the classic ERASERHEAD, the documentary LNYCH (one) or the numerous short films, David Lynch 5 offers fans a great insight into the director's creative world. Absolutely recommended!!!
