Film: Three generations under one roof - that goes quite well with the Färbers so far. Without men, grandma Margarete (Brigitte Mira), mother Magda (Brigitte Grothum) and daughter Margot (Gabriele Schramm) actually master their everyday life very well. But then everything happens at once: Margarete learns that her pension will be considerably less than expected, Magda no longer puts up with her boss's harassment and quits, and Margot falls victim to her company's radical savings policy. Where is the money to come from to pay the rent for their shared apartment in an old Berlin building, which is now threatened with a hefty rent increase? Grandma Margarete has the saving idea: a food truck, very close to the neighbourhood, could be a real goldmine. But although the three women throw themselves into the project with a lot of verve and enthusiasm, they soon have to realize that it's not enough to raid the piggy bank and have a few good ideas to get off the ground with their own food truck. But the resolute grandma Margarete is not intimidated by the bureaucratic madness and soon Färbers Grill-Treff can entertain the first customers. But that's just the beginning...

Drei Damen vom Grill is one of the longest-lived and most successful ARD early evening series ever, with 140 episodes broadcast between 1976 and 1991. 24 years after the grill was fired up for the last time, the Färber ladies still have a loyal fan base who can now enjoy the release of the complete series in a beautiful box including a curry sausage dish. Why the series still works so well is clear from watching the first episodes. On the one hand, the Three Ladies from the Grill exude pure nostalgia and offer a piece of extremely charming, "ideal world" television in a way that simply no longer exists today. The productions are amusing and pleasantly unexciting, the actors somehow seem very natural and just likeable and the stories seem to be taken from life.

And even though the first episodes have almost forty years under their belt, they seem more up-to-date than ever. Economic problems that force companies to lay off workers and short-time work, the problem of many old people that they simply can not live on their small pensions, constantly rising rents and bureaucratic madness - these are topics that still determine the everyday life of many viewers in 2014. The scene in which grandma Margarete has to go through official hell to first get her pension notice and then get the necessary permits for the food truck show just how little has changed in this area in recent decades.

Despite the very obvious 70s look, however, it's moments like these that make the series not seem completely antiquated. And the wonderful ensemble of actors, which also included Günther Pfitzmann, Harald Juhnke, Ilja Richter or Evelyn Gressmann, makes the multiple award-winning series even in 2014 a very great pleasure. For TV nostalgics, the box set consisting of twenty DVDs is therefore an absolute must: 60 hours of saucy charm and wonderful humor - you can only get that with the Three Ladies from the Grill. So insert DVD and curry sausage on the plate - and the nostalgic pleasure is nothing more in the way!

Picture + Sound: For testing, only a press screener with the first episodes of the series was available. The picture of these episodes always shows clear signs of age such as small dirt or drop-outs, the coloring and also the image sharpness, however, can convince. The mono sound sounds a bit muffled, but transports the voices pleasantly powerful from the speakers. A not optimal conversion, but nostalgics who have grown up with this series, but will certainly not be too bothered by the weaknesses of this digitally remastered version.

Extras: The bonus material of the box, which consists of interviews with some actors, could not be sighted on the press screener and therefore can not be judged at this point.

Conclusion: Three Ladies from the Grill is still cult over 23 years after the end of the series. Fans can now get a piece of ideal television world home, because all 140 episodes of the early evening series are now available in a box. Even if the technical realization is not perfect and the picture has some clear weaknesses, lovers of German feel-good series simply can not get past the lovely ladies from the grill. A must for TV nostalgics and therefore also: absolutely recommended!
