Girl from the Naked Eye - Blu-Ray

Movie: Jake (Jason Yee) works as a driver for an escort service that operates illegally out of The Naked Eye strip club. On his job, Jake meets and falls in love with sixteen-year-old prostitute Sandy (Samantha Streets). But the romance between the two lasts only briefly, because one evening Sandy is brutally murdered. Jake now swears revenge. From his boss Simon (Ron Yuan) he gets a book in which all the names of his customers and thus also of Sandy's clients are listed. One of them must be the culprit. But the fact that Jake is in possession of such an explosive book, displeases some gentlemen so much that now they in turn hunt him down. And so begins a bloody night, at the end of which Sandy will not be the only victim.

Girl from the Naked Eye mixes elements of martial arts action, film noir and gritty revenge thrillers, adding a little eroticism, humor and a dash of romance. The end result may not be particularly intellectual in terms of content, the characters relatively flat and the dialogue seem to come from the film noir cliché manual. And yet, the film has a pleasantly high entertainment value, which is also achieved by the fact that director David Ren doesn't bother with much plot, but tries to provide his viewers with fast-paced action in a gritty atmosphere from beginning to end.

Since especially the numerous fight sequences work very well, but also the repeatedly interspersed humor, which at times seems to take on almost whimsical features, is fun, the points that would commonly be called a weakness, as such do not really matter. Almost surprisingly, the love story between Jake and Sandy, which is told in short flashbacks, is actually believable, which also makes Jake's bloody vendetta understandable to a certain extent. Sure, even with this aspect you can't really talk about depth. But since at least the main character gains a little character contour here, the film benefits from these few quiet moments through enormously.

Who gets involved in the mixing of different genres and does not always take the events in Girl from the Naked Eye seriously, will be able to discover that there is a lot of fun potential hidden in the 83 minutes, which may not make the film a masterpiece, but which at least guarantees an enjoyable home cinema evening. Worth seeing!

Picture + Sound: The picture quality of the Blu-Ray is on a very high level. Although the action takes place mainly in gloomy surroundings, the detail representation is very good thanks to the well-tuned contrasts and the coherent black levels. And the sound, which is available in a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix, is also convincing. Especially in the numerous action sequences, there are quite a few good surround effects that provide a lot of movement in the tonal events. Good!

Extras: The only bonus on the Blu-ray is the trailer for the film.

Conclusion: Girl from the Naked Eye is a mix of martial arts action and film noir, spiced up with some sex, humor and romance. Even if the actors sometimes act a bit wooden and the mixture doesn't always work, the low budget production offers on balance quite decent entertainment. The positive impression, which is underlined by the technical realization, is only marred by the lack of bonus material. Therefore: no masterpiece, but quite entertaining home cinema entertainment with some very good fight sequences. Worth seeing
