Film: Having already proven that it is absolutely feasible to conjure up sophisticated dishes in 30 minutes, England's star chef Jamie Oliver now goes one step further. In his new project, Jamie's 15 Minute Kitchen, he shows that fast food can be delicious, healthy and even a little sophisticated. In addition to the cookbook of the same name, Oliver has also prepared the dishes listed there on camera and turned them into a TV show, the first fourteen episodes of which are now available on DVD.
In each of the just under 23-minute episodes, Oliver cooks two dishes that are presented in a way that is easy to follow. There are minor differences between this and the information in the book (for example, in some cases the calorie or quantity information varies), but overall the series is a successful visualisation of the best-selling cookbook. The information that the recipes can be prepared in only 15 minutes is admittedly a bit tight, since Oliver as a professional chops much faster than many a kitchen layman and since he already has all the ingredients perfectly prepared. A few minutes more should therefore be planned. But the preparation of two recipes in a self-experiment (Maritime Pasta, Beef Stroganoff) has proven that even amateur cooks with relatively little experience can easily and really amazingly quickly recreate these recipes - and that the result is pleasingly tasty.
Vol. 1 features the following dishes:
Chilli-con-carne meatballs / Glazed sesame chicken
Pretty fish casserole / Steak Asian
Camembert sticks, Autumn salad &. Cranberry dip / golden chicken
beef stroganoff / mussels Moroccan
1-A Fish Roll / Farfalle & Mushrooms
Lamb on a Stick / Maritime Pasta
Chicken Dim-Sum / Crispy Birk Pockets
Crispy Duck / Chicken Spaghetti
Sea Bream Moroccan / British Burger
Pork Fillet Caribbean / Minestrone
Pasta Pesto / Swedish Meatballs
Salmon with Green Tea Crust / Greek Salad
Grilled Steak / Crispy Chicken
Fillet Steaks / Rice with Fish and Eggs
Picture + Sound: In a cooking TV show, the technical quality is likely to play a minor role. There it is primarily about the fact that the dishes are presented tasty - which is achieved on the DVD by the good image sharpness and the coherent color scheme - and that the preparation instructions are easy to understand. Although it's a little annoying that the original English audio hasn't been fully faded out on the German language version and the German voice-over commentary has just been superimposed on top of it, the stereo mix is powerful and clear enough to follow Jamie Oliver's instructions with ease. Good!
Extras: Unfortunately, the DVD has no extras to offer.
Conclusion: The cooking show Jamie's 15 Minute Kitchen is the continuation of the successful concept that Jamie Oliver had started with his 30 Minute Menus, which had then led to the cookbook about the 15 Minute Kitchen. In the first fourteen of a total of forty episodes, the popular chef presents 28 very different recipes that can be easily recreated following his clear instructions. Even if 15 minutes are very tight, even inexperienced hobby cooks with very little time can enjoy great taste experiences. For all fans of Jamie Oliver and for everyone who is looking for very special fast food recipes, this first double DVD of the new series is absolutely recommendable!
