Movie: Single mom Karla (Halle Berry) sacrificially takes care of her son Frankie (Sage Correa). When she's not pushing overtime at the diner, where she has to deal with cranky customers, she's giving her all to make sure Frankie has a good childhood. This is supposed to include a visit to an amusement park. But unfortunately this turns into a real nightmare when the boy is kidnapped in front of his mother. Karla doesn't hesitate and follows the kidnappers in her car. A wild chase begins, in which Frankie seems to be within reach and yet unreachable. But even when the gangsters' car finally stops, the horror for Karla and her beloved son is far from over.

Kidnap was already filmed a few years ago, but when the studio went bankrupt, the release date was postponed several times before the thriller was actually still allowed to come to US cinemas in the summer of 2017. With us, the thriller appears directly for home cinema. And there he is also quite well taken care of. Here and there you have the feeling to see a sequel to The Call - Do not hang up! in which Halle Berry also tangled with a kidnapper. But despite certain parallels Luis Prieto, the director of the Pusher remake, has staged decent suspense cinema, which has to offer some very rousing moments, especially in the first third. A fairly quiet beginning is followed here by a non-stop car chase, which Prieto and his team have executed in a truly gripping manner.

Sure, the whole thing seems arguably contrived and also does not always take it so exactly with the logic. But the tension is maintained over long stretches, this does not really weigh negatively. Halle Berry plays the desperate, determined mother convincingly, even if she has to fight not only with kidnappers, but also with a lot of clichés. All the other actors leave little lasting impression, but that's primarily because the film is effectively a one-woman show.

Kidnap doesn't reinvent the wheel, nor does it leave much of a lasting impression. But at least the film can offer 90 minutes of good and quite exciting entertainment, which is why this home cinema premiere absolutely deserves a worth seeing!

Picture + Sound: Since only a stream was available for the test, no information can be given about the final picture and sound quality at this point.

Extras: The DVD has no bonus material to offer

Conclusion: Kidnap is a solid thriller, which with some good suspense moments and fast-paced chases over the somewhat bumpy dramaturgy consoles. No masterpiece, but thanks to the very committed playing Halle Berry well worth seeing!
