Murder on Shetland - Season 2 - DVD

Content: Leanne Randall frantically reports to the Shetland police. She had met a young man called Robbie Morton on the ferry. They had arranged to meet again, but Robbie had disappeared without a trace. Leanne is sure that something has happened to him and that a mysterious stranger (Ciarán Hinds), with whom Robbie had argued on the ferry, has something to do with it. But the police do not believe her. It's not until a young boy ends up in intensive care after finding strange pills on the beach that alarm bells start ringing for Detective Inspector Jimmy Perez (Douglas Henshall). He's convinced that the drug find and Robbie's disappearance are connected. When the young man is found murdered, all clues seem to lead to the mysterious stranger. But it quickly becomes apparent that this case is even bigger than they thought. As Perez and his team investigate Glasgow for the masterminds, the story takes an unexpected and life-threatening turn.

Season 2 of the Murder in Shetland series tells a long story in three feature-length episodes that really isn't boring for a second, thanks to the numerous twists and turns alone, as well as the short-lived plot shift from Scotland's Shetland Islands to Glasgow. The creators of the series based on the Shetland crime novels by Ann Cleeves have managed to weave various plot lines into an atmospherically dense thriller that can maintain its suspense for over five and a half hours with numerous twists and turns.

The events in Glasgow then tighten the suspense screw much more intensely. As atmospheric as the rugged landscape of the Shetland Islands is, a little variety does the series a world of good - especially when, as here, only one major case is dealt with in a season. Another positive aspect is the high-profile guest star Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Rome), who raises the already high level of acting in the series.

The second season of Murder in Shetland - marked in the UK as season 3. Season marked, as the pilot is counted as the first season there - offers absolutely riveting crime entertainment despite the again very quiet storytelling, which is also raised to a very personal level for Perez and his team in the last part. If you like it a little darker, you will get your money's worth here. Absolutely worth seeing!!

Image + Sound: The series lives on the atmosphere created by the harsh landscape. This is captured in atmospheric images, which thanks to a successful color scheme and a decent overall sharpness on the DVD is well accentuated. The sound is rather restrained, with the powerfully mixed dialogue being repeatedly supported by well-used ambient noise. Good!

Extras: Unfortunately, the DVD set has no bonus material to offer.

Conclusion: Murder on Shetland tells in this season overarching a single case, but which gradually takes on immense proportions and becomes a real challenge for the investigators even on a personal level. An all-round successful season, which is available on DVD in good picture and sound quality. The only drawback: there is no bonus material. Nevertheless, the following applies here quite clearly: absolutely recommendable!
