Film: The young screenwriter Sam (Josh Gad) dreams of his big break in Hollywood. After his first film was only marginally successful, Sam has been stuck on his second screenplay for quite some time now. Actually, with his conditionally attractive looks and his recurring neuroses, he would be the perfect candidate to bob along in mediocrity forever. But there is one aspect of Sam's life that works surprisingly well: his relationship with his charming girlfriend Sammy (Kristen Ruhlin), an aspiring actress. Their relationship gives Sam inspiration for his new movie, and so there's no question in his mind that if the film ever comes to fruition, Sammy will star. But then something happens that Sam would never have expected: superstar Kim Powers (Hilary Duff) of all people shows interest in the script. This could mean the hoped-for breakthrough for Sam - but at the same time also the end of his relationship...

She wants me is a small independent production, which at least could win Charlie Sheen as co-producer. But who now expects a comedy in the style of Two and a half men, will certainly be disappointed. Apart from Sheen's small guest appearance, which the scandalous mime does in his best Charlie manner, the film is rather a well-behaved, charming romantic comedy, which is dragged down in quality by some very flat moments. For example, one scene shows a dinner at Sam's family's house, which is really badly done and not funny at all. Although other scenes often fail to get the big laughs, such extremely flat and humorless moments are fortunately the exception in the film.

Other than that, the story comes across as rather restrained and somewhat dignified. There are always relatable, well-observed moments, amusing glimpses of the movie business, and well-crafted dialogue that are roughly balanced with the more flat gags and moments of irrelevance. Even though the characters don't always behave in a particularly sympathetic manner, Sam and Sammy actually remain likable throughout the film. This is due to the charming actors Josh Gad (Love and other Drugs) and Kristen Ruhlin, who have a coherent chemistry between them. This not only makes it believable why Sammy could fall for a guy like Sam. Even some of the weaker moments get a little more of the zing through the well-harmonizing play of the two, which the film otherwise rather lacks.

She wants me thus has a few really nice moments and a few terribly bad scenes, but in between dominates harmless entertainment that hurts no one, but lacks a little pace, comedic timing and depth of content to really convince sustainably. Nevertheless, if you like American independent comedies of the more harmless kind, you can at least give this one a look.

Picture + Sound: You can tell that the film was made on a fairly low budget. As such, the sharpness of the overall very clean image shows small weaknesses in some scenes and here and there the action looks slightly washed out. The bright colors, on the other hand, leave a consistently positive impression. The audio is mixed quite restrained for genre reasons, with the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix primarily dominated by the very front-mixed dialogue and soundtrack. Good!

Extras: Bonus features include a couple of short cut scenes that are in their raw form, as well as the trailer for the film and other programming tips from the provider.

Conclusion: She wants me is a nice independent comedy, but one that too often gives away its ever-shining potential for flat silliness. A few nice moments and the sympathetic actors but at least ensure that the film despite some clear hangers on the bottom line is still well worth watching. The DVD is technically well done, but the bonus material is hardly worth mentioning. If you like romantic comedies somewhere between clever ambition and shallow silliness, you can safely risk a look here
