After the brutal murder of the love of his life, Tara, Jax (Charlie Hunnam) has only one goal: revenge! He has no idea that his mother Gemma (Katey Sagal) killed his wife. To save her own skin, she accuses a member of Lin's gang of killing Tara and the sheriff. And immediately, Jax sets in motion a revenge plot that could soon escalate into a bloody gang war that also involves the Aryan Brotherhood. The more blood that flows, the more Jax seems to lose control, and for the first time, the future of SAMCRO is not under a good star. Because soon the Sons of Anarchy have not only the police and the Chinese against them. But Jax knows perfectly how to form new alliances to finish his vendetta. But what happens when he learns the truth?
With season 7, Sons of Anarchy comes to an exciting, bloody and very consistent end. Most of the storylines are brought to a close - some with very emotional outcomes. Especially the finale could be accused of being a bit too thick. And some elements of the final season may not quite live up to the quality of the series. But that's complaining on a high level. Because even if the series runs out of steam a bit towards the end, it remains extremely exciting and involving until the very last second. The realization is television on quite a high level, with some of the shots being almost cinema quality. The action sequences are again great and extremely relentlessly realized. And some moments hit the viewer with full force in the stomach area - just as you are used to from the Sons.
If there is one real criticism of this final season, it relates to Gemma. Too much time is devoted to her, which makes for unnecessary length and takes the focus away from the central story. Certainly Gemma is a central part of the story and her fate is inevitably tied to Jax's. Still, it wouldn't have taken as much time to finish her story as was spent here.
Besides that, the creators did a very good job of giving the series some new, fresh impetus, even in the home stretch. Althea Jarry (Annabeth Gish) is a new sheriff coming to Charming. She's a very strong woman who knows full well that the only way she can get on top of crime in her town is to work with SAMCRO rather than against it - and she does that in a very intense way, which makes for some exciting new conflicts. And Nero (Jimmy Smits) gets more and more caught in the middle, which could almost cost him his life - or at least break him mentally.
This and many other aspects make the last season of Sons of Anarchy, despite minor weaknesses, an absolutely worthy conclusion to a great series that has provided entertainment at quite a high level over seven seasons with interesting characters, a dramaturgy based on Shakespeare and some truly outstanding moments of suspense. And therefore there is also for the swan song a clear: Absolutely worth seeing!!!
Picture + Sound: At the technical implementation has not really changed compared to the previous seasons. The image of the final episodes is absolutely clean on Blu-ray and impresses with a very earthy, atmospheric color scheme. The overall sharpness is also at a very good level, which is also evident in a convincing presentation of smaller details. The lively DTS 5.1 mix allows dialogue to come through clearly and powerfully, while some well-executed effects such as gunfire, explosions and of course the rattle of motorcycles provide an excellent surround feel time and time again. And for a TV series, that's really very good!
Extras: Once again, the final season has some good extras to offer. However, there are no audio commentaries this time, which is a shame, especially with the finale. But the fourth disc has a featurette to offer that makes up for this shortcoming: the two-part documentary Carpe Diem takes a detailed and very informative look at the making of the final season in 71:39 mins. Especially towards the end, the whole thing gets extremely emotional, which fans should definitely not miss. This excellent documentary is joined by cut scenes on Disc 1 (approx. 3:53 min.), Disc 2 (approx. 0:49 min.) and Disc 3 (approx. 1:03 min.), as well as amusing outtakes on Disc 4 (approx. 2:41 min.). This final disc also has a few featurettes on the series' legacy (approx. 4:50 min.), Mayhem's motorcycles (approx. 5:11 min.), and last season's guest stars (approx. 7:02 min.). Last but not least, six tattoo stories reveal what the main characters' tattoos are all about (approx. 18:20 min.). Very good!
Conclusion: Sons of Anarchy comes to a close with a 13 episode long vendetta. The individual storylines are consistently brought to a close and the finale is also absolutely coherent. The last season is not one of the best that the series has produced. There are too many lengths (especially the plot around Gemma was extended too much). But the way of Jax in the abyss is nevertheless extremely exciting and rousing to the end. The Blu-ray also presents the conclusion of the series in coherent picture and sound quality. As a bonus, there are no audio commentaries this time, but an excellent documentary (almost) in feature length, which fans should not miss. For this there is then also quite clearly one: Absolutely recommendable!
