Alfred Reed (1921-2005) Punchinello, Overture to a Romantic Comedy James Barnes (b. 1949) Fantasy Variations on A Theme by Niccolò Paganini Johan de Meij (b. 1953) Extreme Make-over Metamorphoses on a Theme by Tchaikovsky Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) Candide Overture George Gershwin (1898-1937) Rhapsody in Blue* Arturo Marquez (b. 1950) Danzon No. 2 Under the motto "Jubilee - Music that Made History" the orchestra's artistic director, Stefan Grefig, brings together wind symphonic arrangements of works by great composers of the present and recent past. As in Britain, wind symphony has a long tradition in the New World. Brass bands and wind ensembles - orchestras consisting only of woodwinds, brass and percussion - were formed from about 1830 onwards, often at universities and colleges as a way of representing the cultural presence of the institutions. In this 'campus atmosphere', orchestras of the highest musical level were formed, whose modern sound tradition, which does not negate jazz sounds, is continued to this day and which distinguished itself precisely through the performance of arrangements of the works or themes of great classical composers. This becomes clear in the music of the two main protagonists of this anniversary concert. Just as Leonard Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' attempts to combine jazz and concert symphonic music, developments from operetta to musical can be heard in Leonard Bernstein's 'Candide' - the melodies of the works are now world famous.
