Literature as a folk festival]]Under the motto "Literature as a folk festival", a literature prize endowed with 20,000 euros will be awarded at the start of the Bergen-Enkheim district festival "Berger Markt". On the day before the official start of the "Berger Markt", the appointment of the new town writer of Bergen-Enkheim will take place.
This prize has existed since 1974 and whoever receives this title may live for one year free of charge in the town writer's cottage "An der Oberpforte 4".
The next day the folk festival is officially opened and the cider queen is crowned. Other highlights include the traditional livestock drive and the district livestock show followed by an awards ceremony. For the "Berger Markt" was originally a cattle market, which probably already took place in the time after the Peace of Westphalia between 1650 and 1670. The first written mention dates back to 1728.
The festival still offers Frankfurt residents of all genertations the opportunity to experience a touch of country life, because in addition to cows and horses, rabbits, chickens and sheep are also traded.
During the festival days, which are organized by the Bergen-Enkheim Cultural Society, there is always a colorful supporting program: Rides, live bands, children's events, a church service and an impressive closing fireworks display ensure that the "Berger Markt" is a real highlight every year, and not just for the people of Bergen-Enkheim
