With the introduction of the 3 colonial hot drinks coffee, tea and chocolate the drinking habits of the Europeans changed completely. Tea was introduced to Holland by the East India Company and first served as a medicine. Since the middle of the 17th century, it has become accepted everywhere as a stimulant. Coffee originated in the Orient and also became native throughout Europe in the 17th century. In 1689 the first coffee house was opened in Frankfurt in the Buchgasse. Only 3 years later there were already 3 in Frankfurt. Chocolate originated in South America and became very popular in Catholic countries throughout Europe as an ideal Lenten food via the Spanish royal family. You can learn about these and other peculiarities of late Baroque and Rococo drinking habits on the guided tour with Laura Grossbach at the Historisches Museum.
