What can still save the world? Ibsen's hero denounces the egoism of people on the one hand and the double standards of church and politics on the other: Brand wants to lead people to the right life. He holds up his own mirror to society again and again and fights uncompromisingly for a better tomorrow. But through his convictions he gets more and more entangled in personal conflicts. When he finally loses his wife and child, he does not abandon his moral standards despite his despair and falls into fanaticism and madness. Ibsen presents us with the modern man who, guided solely by his own will, demands "all or nothing". In collaboration with Norway, the guest country at this year's Book Fair, we are presenting this rarely performed play, which secured the poet's breakthrough as a freelance author in 1866.
