O Fortuna

Whoever is carried upwards has the world at his feet, and whoever is already enthroned at the top is overtaken by the wheel in the next moment: Fortuna's wheel of fate turns unflinchingly as a metaphor for the cycles of life and forms the central motif of Carl Orff's sonorous "Carmina Burana". The 24 songs from medieval sources include intoxicating spring, drinking and love songs and became a brilliant world success. Fortune also favoured Antonín Dvorák at the time, who was commissioned by Johannes Brahms to write several "national piano works", thus helping him to achieve his musical breakthrough. The Slavonic Dances captivate the listener with their lively, characteristic rhythms and are as if written for the orchestra from Brno in the Czech Republic.
