Beethoven as a political figure (panel discussion)

Self-determination and human freedom are the goals Ludwig van Beethoven professes in his "Eroica". That is why the Musikfest is dedicating an extensive concert evening to the idea of freedom: In three concerts and a conversation, we give the floor to composers and performers who have made their art a political commitment and who stand up for peace and freedom.

"I see it as my moral duty to write of war," confessed composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg, who died in 1996, "of the horrors that befell humanity in our century." Again and again he composed his works with the sorrow of lost humanity. To the 100. To mark the 100th anniversary of Weinberg's death, Gidon Kremer and Russian film director Kirill Serebrennikov are dedicating a multimedia retrospective that pays tribute to Weinberg's creative work while alluding to current developments in Russia:
"The 'Chronicle of Current Events,'" the artist, still under house arrest in Russia, explains the title, "was the most important independent, handwritten magazine in the Soviet Union in the 1960s and '70s. Our project tells of an artist's fate, life choices, and the victims of communism and the Holocaust."
