Frédéric Chopin (Nocturne in E flat major op. 9/2, Nocturne in C minor op. 48/1, Mazurka in C sharp minor op. 63/3, Nocturne in F-sharp minor op. 48/2, Impromptu in G flat major op. 51, Valse in A-flat major op. 69/1, Polonaise-Fantaisie in A-flat major op. 61 (1845-1846) ), Robert Schumann (Novellette in F-sharp minor op. 21/8), Johannes Brahms (7 Fantasias op. 116) David Fray has a wonderful answer to the question of what a concerto is: "a place apart from our modern world" - and that's why it's so precious. "There's something ritualistic about it: there are 2,000 people sitting and listening to a brilliant piece together. Those are magical moments." But those moments can't come too often, says the French pianist, considered the great lyricist of his guild, a thrilling introvert, a piano whisperer: He cannot allow himself too many appointments - "because what I need as a musician is time to reflect. And that means staying in the same place for days and weeks to think about music and life in general. You can't play Bach, for example, if you're always on the road." His father is a philosopher, his mother a German teacher, and when asked about his favorite German word, David Fray, not too surprisingly, names: intimacy.
