It was "the brutal and enormous magic" that Charles Baudelaire admired in the dioramas. Conceived in the 19th century by Louis Daguerre as a display stage enlivened with lighting effects, the diorama, as a glass showcase for natural history museums, became the presentation form of knowledge par excellence. In a unique exhibition, the SCHIRN, in cooperation with the Palais de Tokyo, Paris, illuminates a cultural history of seeing. The focus is on the diorama, which realistically stages and reconstructs events, stories, and living spaces using a variety of creative means. From modernism to the present day, the diorama has been a major source of inspiration: a whole range of 20th- and 21st-century artists engage with this concept of seeing in their works, questioning and deconstructing the illusion of reality. The exhibition will feature stunning dioramas and works by artists such as Mark Dion, Isa Genzken, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Jeff Wall. OPENING TIMES:
