Reflection on the essential things: Pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja is one of the important artists of our time whose long career has been built on her persistence in getting to the bottom of things. This also applies to the long months of lockdown, about which the Viennese by choice with Georgian roots says: "That was a time to go into oneself, to look at oneself in the inner mirror. The work on yourself has to continue." Not relying on what has been done, working out what is supposedly familiar anew: This also applies to her approach to Franz Schubert's late sonatas, which the pianist has already presented once, five years ago, in a recording that was described by the press as a "revelation", a "sum of life". On Monday, 25 October 2021, Elisabeth Leonskaja will come to the Alte Oper Frankfurt for a solo evening featuring the three late Schubert sonatas. Starting at 8 p.m. in the Mozart Saal, she will perform Sonatas Nos. 19, 20 and 21, that "late work" by the composer who died at an early age, which speaks of beauty, grace and life as much as of mourning and foreboding of death.
The pianist Matthias Kirschnereit is also concerned with Schubert's musical legacy. Before the concert with Elisabeth Leonskaja, from 6 to 7 p.m., he will welcome those interested in the new format "Kirschnereit's Piano Cosmos" in the Clara Schumann Foyer for the first time as part of the "Alte Oper Campus" music education program. In explanations, which he will illustrate on the piano, and in excerpts from works, he will explore the "Three Sonatas for Eternity". The pianist addresses not only those who will listen to the concert with Elisabeth Leonskaja afterwards, but all those who would like to gain an insight into Schubert's world of sonatas.
A direct encounter between the two protagonists of the evening will take place when Matthias Kirschnereit and Elisabeth Leonskaja discuss their approach to Schubert's sonata cosmos after the concert, at around 10 pm. The audience is cordially invited to this artist talk in the Clara Schumann Foyer, admission is free, but due to current hygiene regulations a ticket is required.
