A quarter of a century of jokes for Germany is the focus of the latest exhibition at Caricatura Museum Frankfurt. Several times the show had to be postponed, but now caricatures from 25 years will be on display here until 21 November 2021, during which the drawing duo Greser & Lenz has now already enriched the FAZ with their work. Achim Greser and Heribert Lenz, who have known each other since they studied graphic and communication design in Würzburg, first worked in Frankfurt for the satirical magazine TITANIC before the journalist and co-editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Johann Georg Reißmüller, took notice of the cartoonists in the mid-1990s.
For the rather conservative readership of the FAZ, Greser & Lenz's humor took a lot of getting used to, especially at the beginning, and the daily political cartoons of the two were definitely received critically. But there was also much applause and soon the works of Greser & Lenz became an integral part of the probably most important daily newspaper in the Rhine-Main area. After 25 years it is now time to look back. Almost 400 drawings are on display in the exhibition, including prints, beer mat drawings, illustrations from "Sagenhaftes Frankfurt" and various animal pictures.
The two cartoonists, who have already won the German Caricature Prize twice as well as other awards, deal with political, cultural, sporting, economic, but also religious topics in their cartoons. In doing so, they often expose how certain topics affect people's everyday lives with bitterly wicked, accurate and extremely entertaining humour. It can be hard to keep from laughing - but not for long, because it is almost impossible not to laugh out loud several times during the tour of the exhibition.
On view is "Greser & Lenz: SCHLIMM" hopefully without Corona-related interruption always Tue-Sun 11am-6pm. Mondays the museum is closed.
