Manchester by the Sea
To see it prevail over La La Land and Moonlight at the Oscars in February, we wish Manchester by the Sea was also because Kenneth Lonergan's terrific but failed (because it barely made it to theaters) coming-of-age drama Margaret was a pretty unique nightmare: After a never-ending production schedule, it was put on hold because Lonergan and Fox Searchlight litigated for years over whether Fox's cut of the work was legal. Finally, the film was briefly released in some US theaters in 2011, seven years after production began. In Germany, it was only released on DVD - what a drama.
Drama because the director already got everything right in that work, which now makes Manchester by the Sea a global hit: the narrative is incredibly sensitive and precise, especially by endowing each supporting role with such depth that abysses and universes keep opening up for the audience to spin on to their imagination.
