Even if you see the light of day on a group of islands of volcanic origin called Vestmannaeyjar off the south coast of Iceland, which is only 17 km² "big", you can indulge your preferences there as a young eccentric. For Unnar Gísli Sigurmundsson, painting and skateboarding were an interesting mix. He was also attracted to music, only the young savage flunked out of music school. Eventually it was an old, broken guitar he found in his parents' house and experimented with until he calmed the beast within. The desire to write music and follow the ceaseless flow of ideas led Sigurmundsson to create his alter ego Júníus Meyvant. 2014 saw the release of "Color Decay", the latter's single debut (a No. 1 hit on National Radio 2 back home), followed by a highly acclaimed EP in 2015, with Danish magazine Gaffa praising its "generously melodic material and exceptionally soulful and soothing listenability". At the Iceland Music Awards, Meyvant promptly won the prizes for Best Song as well as Best Newcomer and was able to perform at the prestigious Roskilde Festival in 2016. In the summer of the same year, "Floating Harmonies" was released, the first album by the singer and guitarist, who has since been celebrated as a Nordic soulman despite his unmistakable folk roots. For the Irish Times reviewer, the voice even evoked memories of Sam Cooke and Van Morrison, and he attested to "a lot of feeling and passion."
