Two truly masterful sonatas are on the programme in this concert, with which pianist Yulianna Avdeeva, renowned for her portrayal of sensitive sound worlds, returns to the Burghofspiele this year. The 2010 winner of the prestigious Warsaw Chopin Competition - the first woman to win the title since Martha Argerich in 1965 - thrilled audiences last year in Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto. Introduced by Schubert's heart-warming Moments musicaux, this year Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 26 in E-flat Major, Op.81a, titled "Les adieux," is the focus of the first half of the concert. The composer himself entitled it "Sonate caractéristique: Les adieux/ L'absence/ Le retour", and above the first three quarters of the opening movement is also written "Le-be-wohl". The second part of the evening is dedicated to Franz Liszt. First, three character pieces are heard, the mysterious La lugubre gondola, then much agitated Unstern! Sinistre, disastro, finally R.W. - Venezia as a restrained hymn to the lagoon city where Liszt lived in his old age. This is followed by the Piano Sonata in B minor, a monumental work that leaves the classical sonata form far behind. If Liszt's output for piano is already unique, this work still towers above the others in its richness of thought.
