Theater Thikwa (D)
Few children's books have had such an impact on US entertainment culture as L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz, thanks largely to the 1939 musical adaptation starring Judy Garland. Often copied, never equaled. But now Berlin's Theater Thikwa sets out to retell the story of Dorothy and her Wonderland companions: The brainless scarecrow is actually quite happy that you can get in anywhere for free with a "hunting license." The cowardly lion shakily raps a paean to fear. The tin man squeals merrily. Only the lady with the red pumps is constantly trying to convince the tour group of her inadequacy.
The music is new too: rap meets electronic jazz, there is singing and dancing, but at the same time the genre is put through the meat grinder. A performative road movie, with existential questions about the value of supposed imperfection lurking along the way. But in the end, the same holds true here: Home is where the heart is.
