Jean-Michel Basquiat's rapid rise in the art world was astonishing not only because of his young age - in a scene dominated by whites, his international success as an African-American artist was a novelty. The fact that Basquiat was repeatedly burdened with racist clichés and prejudices was something he consciously reflected in his paintings, in which he dealt with the history of Western colonialism, the African diaspora, and the systematic discrimination of blacks. What does Basquiat's success mean today for the recognition and representation of Black artists?
