"I want every gig to be magical and always a little bit different. The feeling is what's important, not reproducing a recording on stage," is how Pieter de Graaf explains what fans can expect when he goes on tour. On stage, the Dutchman develops a classic one-man show. However, he doesn't just play piano, but expands his sound spectrum with bass pedals, several MIDI keyboards and a laptop for audio effects, loops and synthesizers. "Pieter de Graaf constructs intricate, neo-classical piano soundscapes full of subtle loops and gentle effects. His music is endlessly beautiful and a wonderful example of how small deviations from musical tradition can bear great fruit" could be read on the internet platform Clash Music. As a teenager he immersed himself in the world of jazz, studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory, but today cites Bach, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Nils Frahm and - above all - Keith Jarrett as his idols. On "Fermata," his album, all of that (and more, up to and including pop and hip-hop) comes to fruition, de Graaf says.
