Two young men with guitars enter the stage and already with the laconic greeting of the audience it becomes clear: ingratiation is not their thing; but guitar playing is. Simon & Jan not only play technically perfectly matched, also their voices enter into an exemplary symbiosis in the fine arrangements. But just when you're about to indulge in this harmony, you're jolted out of your relaxation by the occasionally bitter and often sly lyrics: These two really have something to say, they don't just want to entertain. To understand their message, you don't have to look at them from the left or the right, be old or young. The cynical ballads of these new songwriters are a matter of feeling, they demoralize without moralizing. And that is their fine art.
