.When Hans Karl Breslauer wrote and directed his silent film "The City Without Jews" in 1924, based on Hugo Bettauer's novel of the same name, he could not have known how quickly his dark visions would become brutal reality: In "Utopia" the people blame their Jewish fellow citizens for the general decline. With their expulsion follows the total cultural and economic impoverishment of the city. In 1933, the film was shown for the last time in Amsterdam as an avowal against Hitler's Germany and then disappeared into the archives. It was only in 2018 that a restored version could be screened again for the first time. In view of the ominous topicality of the events on the screen, Olga Neuwirth composed a new film score for "The City Without Jews": garish and angry, enigmatic and humorous, but also unsparing and honest. In the Musikfest we will show the historical film document, accompanied by Neuwirth's contemporary sound world.
