"The double bass" is the solo of a musician who (also) suffers from being solo, but never having a solo. Wordy, whimsical and erratic, he rants about life, art, God and the world, and the tragicomic love of his unwieldy instrument. He plays the largest and most unimportant instrument in the symphony orchestra and makes music between overconfidence and breakdown. Dissatisfied and isolated, he lives alone in a one-room apartment and blames everyone else for his unhappiness. He is shackled to his wooden companion, whom he loves and hates, caresses and damns.
Patrick Süskind turns seventy in 2019 - a good reason to bring "Double Bass" back into the playbill. The author has called his play a comedy, and as with all good comedies, there's more to it than that: In this case, it's a look into the abysses of the German soul. Walter Renneisen, who is also a musician himself, has probably performed "Kontrabass" more than 800 times and has received glowing reviews across the board.
