Tilman Rossmy is called the great storyteller with the few chords. This applies to him solo as a singer/songwriter as well as to his œuvre with Die Regierung. The band, which was founded in 1982, has already broken up twice, but has always come back together, most recently in 2015. Why should you let a group and its legendary status be history forever? Already their debut album "Supermüll", which was re-released in 2013, was for the music journalist Michael Ruff in 1984 "the best NdW record ever". New German Wave? Or Hamburg school after all? Whatever. In any case, Dirk von Lowtzow once let it be known that Die Regierung was the most important source of inspiration for the formation of Tocotronic. After 2017's "Raus", for SPEX a "worthy work of old age" that mirrors Rossmy's life in laconic and self-reflective lyricism, last month followed the sixth production to date, "Was", an autobiographical record. "It's about nervous breakdowns and ghosts. And the eternally exes. Who are all ghosts too," it says. "What" takes us back again and again to the beginnings of life. Of which there are probably countless in every life. To where our memories once began to blossom. And there, where our own biography is mixed with the many lived illusions. With voices from past lives, some of which we no longer even know if it was us who lived them. "What" is apparently set where our lives are becoming more novelistic.
