Visitors to the Holzhausenschlösschen will have fond memories of the highly successful exhibition "Robert and Clara Schumann in Frankfurt am Main" in 2010. Dr. Ulrike Kienzle, the curator of this exhibition, has now written a book about the history of the Robert Schumann Society Frankfurt am Main. The chamber music concerts of this society in the Villa Bonn are an integral part of the musical life of our city. Unknown, and presented in this book for the first time, is the great importance of this society in the history of the cultivation of Robert Schumann's legacy in Germany. It was founded in 1956, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Robert Schumann's death, in his memory. The driving force was the Frankfurt physician, city councillor, Schumann connoisseur and philanthropist Prof. Dr. Max Flesch-Thebesius. His initiative virtually triggered a chain reaction. The GDR did not want to leave the memory of Schumann to the Federal Republic alone. One year later, the Schumann Society was founded in Zwickau. Schumann societies were also founded in Bonn and Düsseldorf. After reunification, all institutions dedicated to Robert Schumann work together in the Schumann Network. None of this would have happened without Max Flesch-Thebesius and his local Robert Schumann Society. Let yourself be surprised by the many details that Dr. Kienzle has discovered. Or did you know that right after its foundation Yehudi Menuhin became an honorary member of the Frankfurt Schumann Society?
