After the great Stanley Kubrick exhibition, the Deutsches Filmmuseum dedicates its next exhibition to a true master of her craft. Probably only real film lovers know her name, but most of them have already seen her work. We're talking about Barbara Baum, one of Germany's most renowned costume designers. Baum has been designing costumes for international and national productions for almost 50 years. She worked particularly closely with Rainer Werner Fassbinder, including for Die Ehe der Maria Braun (DE 1978), Lili Marleen (DE 1980), Lola (DE 1981) and Querelle (DE 1982). She also applied her special flair for historical material to multi-part, opulently decorated TV films such as Katharina die Große (DE/US 1994/95) and Buddenbrooks (DE 2007/08). In her many years of work, Barbara Baum has dressed such acting stars as Meryl Streep, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeanne Moreau and Burt Lancaster. She has received numerous national and international awards for her work, most recently the "Honorary Lola" at the German Film Awards in 2015. Since 24 October 2018, the Deutsches Filmmuseum has been presenting Barbara Baum's multifaceted oeuvre for the first time in a major exhibition of her work. In addition to 40 of her original film costumes from international studios, documents from the costume designer's working archive, which has been held by the Deutsches Filminstitut since 2015, will also be presented. They provide unique insights into the process of creating a film costume, from the first reading of the script and historical research to the drawing of designs and the exciting moment of the first fitting with the actors. A fascinating exhibition that can be warmly recommended not only to visitors interested in costume design. The exhibition will again be accompanied by an extensive supporting programme, including a film series in the cinema of the Deutsches Filmmuseum as well as workshop discussions on the profession of costume designers in Germany. Events on the topic of visual impairment in the museum and cinema are also planned
