The Schirn Kunsthalle - Art Enjoyment for Old and Young

The Schirn Kunsthalle - Art Enjoyment for Old and Young

Category: Museums & Art

The Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt was opened on 28. February 1986 at the Römerberg and is one of the most renowned exhibition houses in Europe.

The term "Schirn" originally refers to an "open sales stand". Until well into the 19th century, "an der Schern" was the location of the sales stalls of Frankfurt's butchers' guild.

Since 1986, more than 170 exhibitions have been realized, including large survey exhibitions on Viennese Art Nouveau, Expressionism, Dada and Surrealism, on the history of photography or on current positions in sound art, on topics such as Shopping - Art and Consumption, the visual art of the Stalin era, the Nazarenes or the new Romanticism in contemporary art.

Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Alberto Giacometti, Frida Kahlo, Bill Viola, Arnold Schönberg, Henri Matisse, Julian Schnabel, James Lee Byars, Yves Klein, Yoko Ono, Joan Miro, Edvard Munch or Carsten Nicolai were presented in large solo exhibitions.

The Schirn's exhibition program presents aspects of important artistic ouvres or overall developments from a contemporary position, as well as explosive topics of today's society.

Since December 2014, the Schirn has been offering a great program for children from 3 years old to elementary school age: The Minischirn. This creative experiencenis and experirungsroom on the topicsfelders of color, shape, and structtur offers children an extragewöhnlichen play and learnparcours, which they can explore on their own while parents check out an exhibit.

In addition to the exhibitions, the Schirn regularly offers events such as the Children's Art Night, Schirn at Night, the Double Feature film series, lectures and special tours.
