Magistrate approves decision in principle - decision by the city council still pending
Frankfurt. At its meeting on Friday, January 17, the City Council of Frankfurt am Main approved the decision in principle for the planned multifunctional arena at the stadium. This is an important step for the long-awaited project.
"The decision finally creates the basis for planning and implementation", explained Lord Mayor Mike Josef. The arena will give the sports city of Frankfurt a boost, similar to the Museumsufer for culture. In addition, the arena is essential for the future of the professional basketball team Skyliners Frankfurt and the ice hockey team Löwen Frankfurt.
Gunnar Wöbke, Managing Director of Skyliners, spoke of a "milestone" and emphasized the importance of the arena for the continued existence of Bundesliga basketball in Frankfurt. Stefan Krämer, Managing Director of Löwen Frankfurt, described a modern venue as "essential for the survival" of professional ice hockey.
The site at the stadium already has planning permission, and a new mobility concept is required independently of the arena. The decision in principle will now go to parliamentary deliberation, the final decision lies with the city council.
