(kus) The Frankfurt Ice Hockey Lions have a turbulent, unique history of relegations, promotions, insolvency and championships. On March 10, after a quarter of a century, the club celebrated its special anniversary in the Kaisersaal of Frankfurt's Römer. Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann pointed out the long ice hockey tradition in the Main metropolis, which dates back to the 1930s. Today, the Lions play in front of a total of 170,000 spectators at the Eissporthalle every season.
Feldmann was particularly impressed by how the seemingly certain end was avoided after the insolvency in 2010. "An admirable achievement. All forces were combined. People moved closer together in the hard times. The club rose again like a Phoenix from the ashes." He then looked ahead and wished success in the playoffs that were about to begin. "As a fan, I will be keeping my fingers firmly crossed," said the Lord Mayor.
Fest speaker and ice hockey fan Claus Wisser once again reviewed the history of the Lions. He also made it clear that there must be a new arena for the future of ice hockey and basketball in Frankfurt. "In order to keep up economically, a new multifunctional hall is necessary," said Wisser. The head of the sports department, Markus Frank, agreed and congratulated the Lions on their anniversary in the Kaisersaal.
