First International Bee Race at MMK
For more than 10 years now, the busy bees on the roof of MMK have been producing delicious city honey. This year, too, the bees of the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, cultivated by the artist group finger, have produced a lot of honey. On August 19, starting at 11 a.m., the MMK invites you to its traditional honey breakfast with fresh rolls and coffee in a family-friendly atmosphere in the MMK 1 restaurant. This year the breakfast will be enriched by a special event: The first international bee race, in which beekeepers from different European countries will fly their colonies to compete for prize money.
At 11:45 a.m., the colonies will take off at a flying height of 90 meters from the roof of the Jumeirah Hotel in downtown Frankfurt. The target is the roof of MMK 1, which is 600 metres away in flight. The six teams will fly for a prize money of 2,000 euros. Since bees orient themselves to magnetic fields and the position of the sun, they will be flown in beforehand to get to know their new temporary home on the roof of MMK 1. The start and landing of the race can be followed live by all guests in the foyer of MMK 1 via video transmission. A subsequent award ceremony will take place at 12.30 p.m. in the MMK 1 restaurant. In addition, there will be a raffle with three prizes: an overnight stay for two at the Jumeirah Hotel in Frankfurt. At 1.30 pm the draw will take place at an after-fly drink at the Jumeirah Hotel.
The bee projects at the MMK and the Jumeirah Hotel are accompanied by the artist group finger (Florian Haas and Andreas Wolf). With the project, the artists want to show the connections between social, animal and artistic production. The honey produced by the bees comes from Frankfurt's parks, gardens and tree-lined avenues. This makes the honey particularly diverse in its composition and taste.
Admission is free.
