"The restrictions are not an end in themselves," explain Lord Mayor Peter Feldmann and Head of Health Stefan Majer in a joint statement. "They serve to protect the population and must take appropriate account of the incidence of infection. In autumn, we had to tighten the rules in view of dramatically rising numbers. Now it is time to return as many freedoms as possible to the citizens. Nevertheless, we ask you to remain prudent. The pandemic is not over yet."
Feldmann says: "We have asked a lot of the people of Frankfurt in recent months. If the overwhelming majority had not adhered to the sometimes very strict restrictions, we would not be talking about relaxations today. The relaxations now on the way are not the merit of politics - they are the merit of the Frankfurters who have pulled together with us."
Health department head Stefan Majer added: "Even though we are now taking major relaxation steps, the rules set by the state still apply. At the places designated by us, there will continue to be a ban on alcohol consumption, which will also be controlled. I would also encourage anyone who may be hesitant to get vaccinated by all means. Now with the release of prioritization, everyone has the opportunity to register and get vaccinated in a timely manner. Maximizing immunization gives us the opportunity to keep the pandemic at bay and take more opening steps soon."
Feldmann and Majer reminded everyone that the mask would remain mandatory in many areas. They said the state's regulations were unaffected by the relaxation in Frankfurt. Thus, a mouth-nose protection must still be worn in shops as well as in buses and trains. The mask requirement also continues to apply at bus stops.
"We have to remain cautious," magistrate representatives explained. "The risk of infection is higher indoors than outdoors. Especially in shops, where many come in and out in a short time, or when you come in the pub, for example, the mask is currently still an indispensable protection. In the open air, the mask must be worn where it is crowded. In doing so, you protect yourself and others."
