Open Day at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre

12.05.2017 | 06:44 Clock | Citywhispers
Open Day at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre

To mark the 200th anniversary of the Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung, the associated Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in
Frankfurt-Bockenheim will open its doors on Saturday 13 May. An extensive program of guided tours, hands-on activities and short lectures will offer young and old exciting insights into the study of nature and climate from 10 am to 4 pm.

The laboratory where one species of giraffe suddenly became four through DNA analysis? A mesocosm hall where different climates are recreated for experiments on mosquitoes? A laboratory where stones are used to research how much it rained thousands of years ago? You can find all that at Frankfurt's Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Center.

What is normally closed to the public can be seen and experienced by visitors on the Open Day</x> on Saturday, 13 May 2017 from 10 am to 4 pm at the Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre, Georg-Voigt-Str. 14-16, 60325 Frankfurt-Bockenheim.

Besides guided tours through the laboratories and climate chambers, numerous information booths and hands-on stations await curious visitors. They can, for example, crawl into camouflage tents and, like ornithologists in the field, observe the pine jay, a bird with an
extraordinary memory. Elsewhere, those more partial to the wet element can experience the study of aquatic insects using live specimens. And for those who like weighty facts, there is a playful
short run through the Earth's history on 4.5 m.

Those who want to know even more can satisfy their hunger for knowledge with numerous exciting short lectures on biodiversity and climate change. For example, the opening lecture "What use is nature to us?" will discuss what services nature provides for us every day free of charge and why it is worth protecting biodiversity. After each talk, the speakers will be available to answer questions.

The hands-on activities are suitable for children aged 4 and over. Weather permitting, the Research Center garden will be open. Admission is free of charge. Registration is not required.
