Palmengarten: Renovation work in the open air and in the Tropicarium

One of the absolute favourite places in the city, which attracts not only tourists but also Frankfurt residents, is without question the Palmengarten. The highly frequented botanical garden not only offers a small oasis for relaxation in the middle of the big city, but also inspires again and again with special shows or events such as the great festival of lights. But the years have not left the palm garden unscathed. Work has been going on for some time now, for example, and another section of the renovation of the water pipes in the open air has recently begun. The good news is that the work should be largely completed by the start of the Green Fair on 16 March. But: until then, there will be temporary diversions of visitor traffic in the centre of the garden. The next sections are planned for autumn 2018 and spring 2019. By spring 2021, all the old pipelines, where there were repeated water losses and pipe bursts, should be renovated.

These are not the only works in the Palm Garden, however. The popular Tropicarium is also undergoing further vigorous renovation. Therefore, from Monday, 19 February, until probably the end of 2018, the so-called North Star (Wet Tropics) will be closed to visitor traffic. Only the Mangrove House will be accessible again from Monday, 5 March, after completion of the renovations there. The South Star (Dry Tropics) will remain open to Garden visitors during this time. Renovation work in this area is scheduled for next year.

The renovation of the technical facilities in the Tropicarium is intended to ensure the long-term conditions that the plants cultivated there need in order to continue to be shown to a wide audience. In addition to state-of-the-art technology, a key aspect is the optimisation of energy efficiency. That's why the temporary closures are so acceptable, isn't it?

The track construction work is likely to cause the least disruption. To ensure that the Palm Express can continue to make its rounds safely in the future, parts of the track bed and tracks will be renewed over the next three weeks. This will mainly take place in the area of the rhododendron garden south of Villa Leonhardi.

Although the greatest care has been taken in planning to keep restrictions for guests to a minimum when carrying out the work, diversions and partial closures cannot be avoided when the public is open all year round. The staff of the Palm Garden ask for your understanding
