The Summer Yard Limited Edition Program

14.07.2020 | 22:34 Clock | Culture
The Summer Yard Limited Edition Program

As we already told you HERE, the SOMMERWERFT, the popular cultural festival on the Main, will take place in a slightly different form this year. We are very happy to support this limited edition of the Sommerwerft as a media partner and to be able to present you now more details about the program, which will be offered from July 24 to August 9 at the Weseler Werft and other locations in the city. protagon e.V. presents you an adapted cultural program under Covid regulations. Thursdays through Sundays there will be open-air theater, singer & songwriters, poetry slam and performance at the Weseler Werft for a limited number of visitors. If you can't make it to Main or can't be there on site due to admission restrictions, don't be sad: All Sommerwerft fans can also join in via livestream this year.

From Monday to Wednesday, the grounds on the river will be closed and the Sommerwerft will go mobile: on these festival days, theater artists will parade through neighborhoods and locations in the region, performing scenes from plays by the Frankfurt-based ensemble antagon theaterAKTion. This Sommerwerft mobil is made possible by the support of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain. The Sommerwerft Limited Edition is sponsored by the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt am Main. All offers and actions are of course accompanied by distance, infection control and hygiene measures, which were developed in collaboration with AES concept and other partners.

For the opening on Friday, 24. July after 3 p.m., the "Sommerwerft mobil" will move from the pedestrian passage Ostendstraße to the "Sommerwerft - limited Edition" on the eastern bank of the Main - in keeping with the tradition of the "cultural invasion" with which the Sommerwerft is usually heralded. This kick-off will be accompanied by speeches by the Head of the Cultural Office of the City of Frankfurt am Main, Ms. Sybille Linke, and by Dr. Julia Cloot, curator and deputy managing director of the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain.

Since March 2020, protagon e.V. has been working together with antagon theaterAKTion, AES Konzept and other partners on the question of how theatre in public space can be implemented in a way that is adapted to the pandemic measures? Almost weekly the regulations and possibilities for a limited variant change, which could be implemented together with hygiene measures and visitor number restriction. The answer is now given by all those who have worked on the preparation and decisions: live from Friday 24 July on site or in the livestream from 9 pm.

Whether the official number of visitors of currently 250 may be exceeded on the extensive Mainufergelände, is currently still being investigated with the relevant offices. "250 people on the grounds of the Sommerwerft would be more than a shame, as we can coordinate much more with our planning on this large site well," gives Marina Fischer, part of the Sommerwerft team of protagon e.V., to understand and hopes that this will eventually be possible.

A tailor-made hygiene and safety concept was developed by protagon e.V. and the Frankfurt experts of AES Konzept GmbH and adapted in accordance with the respective current regulations of the Hessian state government,. The measures also include Covid tests for international helpers.

The site is planned through

It is clear that in these unusual and also uncertain times, a festival like the Sommerwerft must be extremely well planned through. Thus, the team of the Sommerwerft has been in preparations for a real limited version for weeks. To design cultural free space for people in this so very different summer in such a way that it is safe for all participants - visitors as well as actors - is a challenge that the association can realize together with strong partners. Finally, a cultural venue is to be created again - low-threshold, despite limited visitor numbers. More space, but no tents and considerably fewer performances are planned. All areas that were otherwise occupied by theatre tents, Bedouin tents or the containment of the cocktail bar are planned this time as open spaces, partly with projection surfaces. They would be used for theatre and music performances, but also for chilling out in marked areas close to the action. So there will be one or two open-air singer-songwriters, songwriters and performances in addition to one theatre performance each evening in the public space.

Streaming program online and public viewing

The program will be realized Thursdays to Sundays at the Wesel shipyard. Digital and parallel streaming of the summer shipyard will take place: Thurs. - Sat. 21:30 - 23:00 & Sun. 19:45 - 22:00. Because not many people are allowed to stand at the stages, there are screens in several places on the grounds for the theatrical shows. When it gets dark the cameras go online and show a pre-show and then the shows. The online streaming program shows the shows including the supporting program. It also captures atmospheric images of the site and reports on ongoing actions of other initiatives, all with the same goal: to live a culture of openness and solidarity worldwide.

In addition to long-time media partner FRIZZ Frankfurt, Frankfurt's free culture and event magazine, our portal www.Frankfurt-Tipp.de will support the online presence of the Sommerwerft so that more people can "be there".

Theatre in public space, in the living space of society

.The original idea for the Sommerwerft once came from the minds of Frankfurt's largest theater collective, antagon theaterAKTion, which in turn was looking for its venues for performances in Frankfurt. To develop this designated place for events in the east of Frankfurt was 19 years ago the way, which was paved by protagon e.V. with the Sommerwerft.

Perhaps that is what makes this atmosphere of the Sommerwerft: the development of a public place, which grows into a work of art that is realized by actors*, artists* and theater makers* themselves. "And: the public space is right now the living space that our society has for cultural use. Times and the way we live together have changed significantly and will also affect the forms of our social interaction in the future. The question for me as a theatre maker now is, will this future happen with tangible performing arts or without them. Sommerwerft 2020 will be an answer to that question," says Bernhard Bub, artistic director of Sommerwerft.

Corona and its associated ordinances for larger audience gatherings is one current problem, the other, the challenge of equally strict spacing regulations for theatre artists among themselves. Larger productions can't happen on stage like this unless the artists live together. That is the case with antagon. The ensemble lives and works as a collective on the cultural premises of the association protagon and supports in many projects by artistic and technical expertise. antagon TheaterAKTion can therefore play this year large productions on the street, the stage in public space.

Scenic performances in urban space

Mondays to Wednesdays antagon TheaterAKTion, together with protagon e.V. and AES Konzept, make scenic journeys into urban space with a mobile concept and mobile stage. Where otherwise few cultural offers arrive, where perhaps theatre and performing arts are not immediately expected, walk-acts and station theatre bring a kind of mobile summer shipyard to the people in the neighborhoods and living spaces.

Dates: Monday (7/27 & 8/3), Tuesday (7/28 & 8/4) and Wednesday (7/29. & 8/5)

Summer yard mobile - NO operations at the site. Venues will be announced starting next week. This project is supported and made possible by the Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain.

In 2020, the Sommerwerft idea will still be alive and well despite the world situation and will remain diverse, close and down-to-earth - despite mouth and nose protection, distance regulations and space management.
